"I have been an acoustic, instrumental guitarist since my teens. Finally, at 68, I decided I wanted to add singing to my musical repertoire. I truly believe I was a terrible singer but being highly motivated I also believed that over time (probably a long time), I could improve if even to a level that I would enjoy singing and playing guitar even if it was just for me. Three months ago I found Camille (bonus: she likes to be called Camee!) during a search for vocal instruction and Winnipeg. I decided fairly soon in the selection process that I wanted a “one on one” instructor that would be flexible enough to teach me- my way. I listened to a few of Camee’s YouTube videos and was impressed with her singing and being a newer singing instructor, I felt she would be more flexible in meeting my teaching needs. Turns out it was a perfect match for me.
At the initial lesson, I was naturally apprehensive of what she might think of my lack of singing ability, but she was very supportive and very quickly my confidence increased. Improvement was needed for sure, but she made me confident that progress could and would be made. Instruction initially focused on vocal technique, which to my surprise, in only a few weeks, my singing improved quite a bit! As each additional week went by, my singing became more in tune and my voice was stronger the more I practiced.
Practice for me is singing at home with my guitar, but also singing constantly to songs I wanted to learn using streamed music from my phone while driving. Lessons now consist of singing and playing guitar and working on pieces in real time. Camee in a relatively short time has really helped me become an “OK” singer – OK enough that I actually look forward to singing and playing guitar for friends and family. I can’t wait to see what improvements are made in the next three months!
